Technological Revolution – Technological revolution is a dramatic social change in important structures brought about relatively quickly with the introduction of some new technology.
Revolution – A forcible overthrow of a government or social order, in favour of a new system.
This is part of my word association, I will use this to help me with my word association mindmap, I will use this thesaurus to help me link words together to get a better understanding of revolution.
This is my word association mindmap, I will use this to help me research different ideas for my game, there will be certain topics I want to cover within my game, for example, I could combine, Steampunk, Wrench and technology, and use that research to help design a steampunk mechanic. This mindmap will be the guideline for future research.
The first branch is all about war and how that comes under the term revolution, I wrote about the Weapons, propaganda and careers, I wanted to cover the olden weapons in war as they can be connected to the old style of steampunk weapons.
The second branch covers steampunk and how it links to technology and revolution, I covered some of the technology I’ve seen in films and games. I used the mentioned the classic wrench and spanner. I also listed some standard pieces of clothing you’d see a steampunk wear, this could help me with character designs.
The third branch was the modern branch, I did list some modern weapons, but I also brought up authority on my list, as it’ll be interesting to talk about authority in my game, and that right and wrong is usually decided by the most powerful.
The forth branch covers the technology side of revolution where I list the working conditions of the industrial revolution and the terrible things done to people when people research and work on ways to improve technology, I’d like to use the idea that you can’t progress without sacrifice.
The word revolution to me has this feeling of progress, improving something for the better of mankind. Words in this like “Innovation” interests me as a topic. Technology has always been a part of my life, so having a topic that can be related to my interests will be great. The word also has links to conflict and war, times where people had to stand up for themselves to make a difference to their society.
My first choice of mood board, the industrial revolution was an exemplary time for technological growth, like the first reliable steam engine, made by James Watt in 1775. Despite the massive growth in tech, the number of child workers back then were dangerously high, this was because they can crawl through tighter spaces. This will help me with the atmosphere of my game, as it was an eerie time and had a dark setting.
War and conflict play a big part in the revolution, wherein a time where citizens were being treated unfairly, they would rise up and take control of their lives, people took up arms and rioted in the street to protest the unfairness within their society. This will help me understand the community and how people are powerful when they rise up together.
In modern society police are now more heavily equipped to deal with riots, this just shows that a lot of the efforts made in the past are now in vain due to the fact that the government are a lot more powerful than they used to be. This will help me understand the power of authority.
When it comes to technology, Steampunk has always been something of a fascination to me, olden times, mainly the wild west, building colossal machines, adding machinery to themselves (human augmentation) and coming up with the wackiest weapons that work amazingly in battle. This will help me create interesting weapon designs.
